Cellulite occurs primarily in women but sometimes in men as well. Cellulite is caused by uneven tension within the hypodermal layers which causes dimpling. Adipose fat (cellulite) is like a sponge and it can hold and store fat, toxins and waste. Poor circulation, trapped toxins and water waste in the adipocytes, loss of skin elasticity all contribute to the cellulite phenomenon.
This non-surgical, non-invasive treatment for cellulite has three components, radiofrequency energy (RF), infrared light energy (heat), and mechanical vacuum massage. The heat from the RF and infrared light, combined with the vacuum massage, increases metabolism of the fatty layer (cellulite), shrinks the size of the adipocytes, tightens and smoothes the contour of the skin and increases circulation and promotes waste elimination. In addition to minimizing cellulite dimpling, VelaShape reduces the circumference of the treated thighs—by an average of about an inch, according to studies.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved VelaShape for the treatment of cellulite on the thighs.
Most patients find Velashape treatments comfortable, like a warm deep tissue massage. VelaShape sessions can last from 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. You’ll probably retain a sensation of warmth or heat for several hours after the procedure. You may also experience some redness, swelling, and (in rare cases) bruising, but these side effects will quickly subside. You can return to your normal activities right away.
Although you’ll notice some tightening and smoothing of your skin immediately, the shrinking of the fat cells takes time. You may need to wait several weeks to see a significant reduction in cellulite. For best results, we usually recommend six to ten treatment sessions, with a week of recovery between sessions. Maintenance treatments are typically done once a month to maintain results.
