FAQ - Matrix IR

Following are a list of frequently asked questions regarding Matrix IR Fractional Non-Ablative Skin Treatment. Use the links at the right to jump directly to a certain question.

What is fractional non-ablative skin treatment? How does fractional non-ablative skin treatment work?

The Matrix IR can improve textural irregularities in the skin due to loss of collagen in the dermis such as: non-dynamic moderate wrinkles, enlarged pores, superficial acne scarring, rough skin texture, and skin laxity of the face and neck. This is done non-ablatively, which means that this is a non-invasive procedure. Most people leave the treatment office with only slight pinkness or no pinkness at all, they can return to work immediately.

The Matrix IR applicator uses a proprietary synergy of light and conducted Bi-Polar RF to create the deep thermal heating needed to both shrink and generate new collagen while protecting the epidermis. The Matrix IR combines a diode (915 nm) laser matrix, bi-polar conducted radio frequency energy and intense epidermal cooling. Use of this combination of modalities results in overlapping light beams penetrating deep into the dermis to a depth of up to 2.5 mm to pre-heat the target tissue, and the RF energy being drawn to the target. This puts the thermal zone where it is effective for wrinkle treatment, while being gentle on the epidermis.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients will have between 3-5 treatments. Treatment sessions are typically spaced 3-4 weeks apart.

What should I do before my treatment?

Laser treatment should be avoided when you have a suntan or sunburn. Patients taking the drug Accutane should avoid any laser treatment until medically cleared by your physician. Retin-A or bleaching creams should also be discontinued 3-7 days before treatment. During your consultation, we’ll review any medications or supplements that you are currently taking to help determine the appropriate course for your treatment.

Will it be uncomfortable? What can I expect with the procedure?

The sensation may be described as a “hot pinch”, like someone snapping an elastic band on your skin. Patients tolerate treatment well by use of either cooling the skin during treatment and/or use of a topical anesthetic cream that numbs the skin.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Most people leave the treatment office with only slight pinkness and/or mild swelling. Patients can return to normal activities immediately.

Once my sessions are completed, will I require maintenance sessions?

Maintenenance treatments can be done once every 6 months, or even sooner if you desire. Most patients see gradual and cumulative results throughout the Matrix IR skin tightening treatments. The total number of required treatment sessions depends on the patient’s skin condition.

What areas of the body does the Matrix IR treat?

Anyone with unwanted moderate facial wrinkles, superficial acne scarring, enlarged pores, or rough skin texture from chronic sun-damage. Pigmentation from chronic sun-damage may also improve over the series of treatments.
