Following are a list of frequently asked questions regarding IPL/FotoFacial/Skin Rejuvenation. Use the links at the right to jump directly to a certain question.
Skin Rejuvenation also known as FotoFacial, IPL or Photorejuvenation is using light and bi-polar radiofrequency energies to restore skin to a more youthful state. Brown spots (pigmented imperfections) from sun damage and aging, red blotchiness from spider vessels or rosacea (vascular imperfections), and uneven skin texture will improve over a treatment series.
Each Skin Rejuvenation treatment will result in gradual lightening and improvement of pigmented and vascular imperfections. Textural improvements are appreciated towards the end of the treatment series.
Treatments are repeated once a month for a total of 4-5 treatments depending on the amount of pigmentation or vascularity. Photodamaged (sun damage) skin, erythema (redness) from Rosacea, Telangiectasias and pigmented lesions typically require 4- 5 treatment sessions. Some resistant vascular and pigmented lesions may require more than 5 sessions to achieve fading or improvement. Fine lines, pore size and superficial depressed scarring may also show noticeable softening after 4- 5 treatment sessions.
Laser treatment should be avoided when you have a suntan or sunburn. Patients taking the drug Accutane should avoid any laser treatment until medically cleared by your physician. Retin-A or bleaching creams should also be discontinued 3-7 days before treatment. During your consultation, we’ll review any medications or supplements that you are currently taking to help determine the appropriate fluence for your treatment.
The sensation is often described as “warm pinch” feeling. The sensation only lasts for fraction of a second, and you may feel warmth or tingling sensation for a short time afterward. Most people tolerate treatment without topical anesthetic, but individuals who are more sensitive may prefer to have the skin numbed before treatment. Your procedure may take minutes to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated.
Temporary pinkness in the skin lasts a very short time, and most people return to work or normal activities immediately after treatment. Brown spots on your skin can temporarily darken followed by fading and flaking (this is normal and expected). Your skin will feel smoother, fine wrinkles and pores will be less noticeable, and sun spots or uneven pigmentation will fade. You will be sensitive to ultra-violet light and you must avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed.
Many patients find that maintenance sessions done once or twice a year help maintain the results achieved after the initial sessions.
Our laser treatments are performed by Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners who are trained and certified by Medical Doctor’s approved by the Medical Board of California.
